#LFW | STARSICA SS19
In an alternative universe where Edward Scisssorhands and line drawings of the late Pablo Picasso and artistic duo DFT run free, is Starsica SS19.
Showcased at Fashion Scout London, SS19 is named “Doctored Evidence: Be True to Yourself.” A collection of key separates and dresses designed to replicated the multilayered fairytale created by head designer, Ike Seungik Lee.
“We begin with a girl waking up alone in a tropical rain forest. Whilst finding her way, she is led by a strange masked crowd to a cocktail party (glamor). Indulging in the party, she witnesses a screen (singularity) a white alligator entering a TV and at this moment lighting (discontinuity) strikes, teleporting her to a strange exotic library which is littered like a crime scene (disorganization). There she discovers the evidence of her fragmented past and the starting point of the memory distortion. From this point onwards, the broken memories are reactivated and her reality is restructured into a new reality. Eventually the story comes to a close (initialization).”
This season, the Starsica girl questions “if, the beautiful memories of the past which allowed me to be who I am today, are actually the outcome of manipulated evidence?”
She is relatable but abstract and unearthly. Throughout the story she collects mementos that are translated into garments. From the stickers seen on the coats that reflect memories of exotic places visited to the zigzag detailed edging of the jackets and rattan dress, everything is throughout and purposeful. We, the audience, are pulled into the story as she goes on this journey to find truth and understanding. While at times the clothing is simple, wearable and straight to the point, there are moments where one piece overtakes an entire look, changing the perspective and out outlook of the model wearing it. A great analogy of how one instant can change a memory.
Lee is a master of fashion fairytales that I am always in awe of. I look forward to his stories every season.
