I wouldn't have believed you if you had told me that Herbie Hancock would be just days away from turning 85. After seeing his show at the Walt Disney Concert Hall this weekend, I am in awe—not only is he still playing with precision and a keen sense of expertise, but the show itself was a true dream for any music lover.

I spent just over two hours trying to follow the music, keeping up with the drummer's counts while being astonished by Hancock's keyboard playing and vocoder usage. I immersed myself in the waves and rhythms of an unforgettable performance that showcased the incredible talent of this legendary composer and musician from Chicago. I watched each person in the band separately, Terence Blanchard (trumpet), Lionel Loueke (guitar), James Genus (bass), Jaylen Petinaud (drums), and, of course, Herbie Hancock (Keys), as my mind drifted into a world of synesthesia, and I floated in my thoughts like a Spike Lee "Dolly" shot.

The syncopation of Petinaud, Genus, and Loueke, alongside the melodies of Hancock's piano and Blanchard's mighty trumpet, creates a remarkable experience. The way each musician waited for a cue surprised the audience, yet it was a calculated decision by the band in what sounded like controlled chaos. Their ability to seamlessly transition between various musical genres – including jazz, cinematic soundtracks, hip-hop, and rock – is astounding. Surprisingly, more people aren't discussing the beautiful synchronicity in their work. From "Actual Proof" and "Butterfly" on Hancock's 1974 album "Thrust" to "Secret Sauce" and "Chameleon," I never wanted the experience to end.

I could go on and on. At one point, a man two seats away leaned over to his neighbor and said, "This is Herbie Hancock. Do you know what you're seeing?" Everyone in attendance certainly did.

We all needed a reminder of how beautiful life is, and I could watch Hancock perform repeatedly for that dose of much-needed dopamine. It was such a fantastic experience. Thank you for having me; this won't be the last time I witness such talent.
