A few months ago I stumbled upon a Skillibeng music video and he’s been on repeat since that day. After months of watching all the music videos, interviews and doing my extensive music journalistic googles, I saw that last night was his first show in Los Angeles.
He did not disappoint.
Now I know LA isn’t known for having a dancehall scene, but believe me, there was still a great turnout and good energy to match.
One thing is for certain, he makes music for the ladies. While “Crocodile Teeth,” “Brik Pan Brik,” and “Whap Whap” are some of his biggest hits, his mostly female crowd is ready for songs like “Badman” and “2Gyal.” There are screams in the crowd from those trying to get his attention and he barely has to recite his words because the crowd will do it for him. I can’t help but think how much pandemonium there will be at his show at Irving Plaza. RCA knew exactly what they were doing signing him last month, they see the superstardom potential. If you are in NY next week, I recommend you go. You will be witnessing something special.
